Q. Will I be asked to introduce myself or say anything when I come
to visit?
A. No, we have visitor registration cards and nametags in each pew. We hope you will take the time to fill these out so that we may share more fully in the life of our church with you. The visitor nametag allows us to introduce ourselves to you and hopefully to help you feel welcome. After your visit we will mail you a letter of appreciation and a copy of our most recent church newsletter for your information.
Q. Is there a dress code or certain expectations about attire?
A. There is no dress code or other qualification to attend worship. We welcome every style of dress to worship. Most worshippers feel comfortable in a range of dressy to casual. Some worshippers wear blue jeans and others wear sport coats and ties. This is up to you.
Q. Would you describe Bethany as mainline or fundamentalist, etc.
in its beliefs and teachings?
A. Bethany UCC, and the United Church of Christ in general, is a mainline
denomination comparable in its understanding of God and the Bible to other denominations such as Methodist, Presbyterian, Lutheran, and Episcopal. We believe the Bible is the inspired word of God and we support and encourage the unique spiritual journey of each individual.
Q. Are there any habits of worship I should be aware of (i.e.
Speaking in
tongues, etc.)?
A. No.
Q. Are children invited to stay in worship?
A. There is a Family Sunday once a month in which children are
encouraged to
stay for the entire service and sit with their families. On the
remaining
Sundays, children traditionally attend for the first fifteen to twenty minutes,
and then leave
after the children's sermon, to attend the second hour of Sunday
School. Nursery care is also available for the littlest ones.
Q. Do you sing familiar hymns? What is the music like?
A. Some hymns would be called "familiar" and some would not,
depending upon
your background. The music is varied, and reflective of the
liturgical season.
